New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed happiness over being elected a temporary member of the UN Security Council of India and has expressed gratitude to the global community for supporting India. The PM wrote in a tweet on Thursday – deeply grateful for the overwhelming support shown by the global community for India’s membership @UN Security Council. India will work with all member countries to promote global peace, security, flexibility, and equity.

Significantly, India has been elected a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council for the eighth time. India was elected as a provisional member for a two-year term after securing 184 votes in the 193-member General Assembly. Along with India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway also won the Security Council elections held on Wednesday. India was a candidate for a temporary seat from the Asia Pacific category for the term 2021-22. New Delhi’s candidature was unanimously endorsed in June last year by the 55-member Asia-Pacific group, including China and Pakistan.

Earlier, India has been elected as a temporary member of the council for years. Such as 1950–1951, 1967–1968, 1972–1973, 1977–1978, 1984–1985, 1991–1992, and more recently in 2011–2012. The UN General Assembly on Wednesday chaired the 75th session of the General Assembly, 5 of the Security Council. Elections were held under special arrangements for non-permanent members and members of the Economic and Social Council due to Covid-19.
